A growing trend has emerged in India where more people are renouncing their Indian passports and citizenship to settle abroad. It is a major concern for the government as it fails to provide better life and opportunities to its citizens.
A 23-year-old Indian IT engineer, earning ₹1 lakh per month highlighted this issue in a recent Reddit post. It sparked a debate where many agreed that settling abroad is better than staying in India.
Indian constitution doesn’t have a provision for dual citizenship. This means in order to fully settle abroad, people have to renounce their Indian nationality.
Recent data reflects this mindset, with 2022 seeing a record number of 2.25 lakh Indians giving up their citizenship. By June 2023, 87,026 had already surrendered their Indian passports, with the US, Canada, and Australia becoming the top destinations.
Over 13 million Indians live abroad, including professionals, laborers, and experts. The Middle-east nations, especially UAE and Saudi Arabia, aren’t far behind, harboring the largest number of Indian workers.
The government doesn’t have much to offer that will bring reassurance to these individuals. Hence, if they get the opportunity to have a better and safer future for their family, they take it.
