For years, many in India, including government officials and citizens, believed that Donald Trump would be beneficial for the country. Leaders such as S. Jaishankar and Piyush Goyal expressed optimism, while Trump supporters in India viewed him as a potential ally.
In an effort to gain his favor, India made significant military and aerospace purchases and reduced tariffs. The expectation was that Modi’s friendship with Trump would lead to improved trade agreements.
However, Trump’s economic approach has never been about rewarding friendships. He perceives India as a competitor rather than a partner, placing American interests above everything else.
When the moment arrived, Trump imposed reciprocal tariffs without hesitation. His policies demonstrated that sentiment and goodwill have no role in trade.
India needs to stop trying to win over leaders who do not prioritize its interests. A strategic and calcuted approach is essential to safeguard India’s economy.
Tariffs should be lowered on products where India is a net exporter, such as gems and pharmaceuticals. Conversely, they should remain on imports like aircraft, where reducing tariffs does not benefit India.
Beyond the U.S., India must enhance trade relationships with Europe and East Asia. Relying on Trump’s America is a risk that India can no longer afford.
