
Indian-origin Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has issued an apology to all LGBTQIA+ people for the insensitive treatment by the UK government, which had banned LGBT individuals from serving in the military until 2000. It was a difficult time during which they had to endure humiliation and sexual abuse, all while they were dedicatedly serving their country. Rishi, on behalf of the British state, expresses the wish that from now onwards, they will be treated with the same respect as veterans.
During the Independent Review Committee led by Lord Terence Etherton, the government acknowledged the harsh treatment of LGBTQ soldiers. Ben Wallace, the Defence Secretary, expressed gratitude to the Review Committee for bringing this shameful chapter to the surface.
