New Act to End H-1B: Real Threat or Political Move?

US Representative Greg Steube has introduced a controversial new bill. The proposal aims to eliminate the entire H-1B program.

This legislation, titled the “Ending Exploitative Imported Labour Act, is being referred to as the EXILE Act.

If passed, it would discontinue new work visa petitions from 2027. The bill seeks to amend the Immigration and Nationality Act.

This proposed bill has generated significant controversy and debate on online communities like Reddit. There has been significant scepticism, with many believing that it is a strategic move for the election year.

Many experts argue that ending the program would entirely collapse the American Healthcare system. Foreign doctors and educators are relied on heavily by the US to keep the system alive.

Indian H-1B holders make up more than 71% of all H-1B holders. They contribute the most to the American economy, working in industries such as tech, healthcare, education, etc.

Experts, however, have offered reassurance to immigrants. They note that such proposals rarely become actual law.

Corporate donors frequently lobby against cutting off skilled labour in the US.

The US faces a much larger issue of digital offshoring, over H-1B workers taking over jobs. Many experts believe that employment moving out of the US to countries with cheaper labour costs is a much more serious concern than eradicating the H-1B program.
