Non-resident Indians often leave their ancestral homes with their relatives and family in full trust. However, this trust is now increasingly getting exploited by illegal encroachment and property possession.
This has become a growing trend across the whole of India but is more often seen in metro cities. An NRI’s relative illegally claims ownership of their property leaving them to fight for their rights in court.
There are legal safeguards in place but it offers no help against the muscle power and corrupt means of land grabbers. Indian diaspora who are affected by these crimes are now reaching out directly to the Prime Minister’s Office, Home Ministry, and Indian embassies for an intervention.
More than just a financial loss, this takes a great emotional toll on the victims. The ancestral homes have a strong link to their heritage and fighting over them against their relatives is terrifying.
Abhishek Rastogi, a counsel for NRI, advises timely police complaints and legal action to prevent permanent loss. He urges swift action from the authorities as delay in such matters could be costly.
This rising trend should be tackled with immediate reforms from the government. There needs to be more effective changes in the system to safeguard NRIs from such injustices.
