In a major update, the Indian government has revised baggage rules related to gold jewellery for Non-Resident Indians and Overseas Citizens of India. The move is aimed at easing long-standing restrictions faced by international travellers.
New Rules Effective From February 2, 2026
The revised policy came into effect from February 2, 2026. It removes the earlier value-based cap on gold jewellery. Only weight-based limits will now apply for eligible travellers.
Who Can Avail the Benefit
NRI and OCI passengers who have stayed abroad for more than one year can bring gold jewellery duty-free. The eligibility criteria remain unchanged. Only qualifying travellers can claim the exemption.
Weight Limits for Gold Jewellery
Female passengers are allowed to carry up to 40 grams of gold jewellery. Male and other passengers can bring up to 20 grams. These limits apply strictly to jewellery items.
Old Value Cap Removed
Earlier, women were restricted to ₹50,000 worth of gold, while men had a ₹25,000 limit. With rising gold prices, these caps had become impractical. The removal of the value limit offers major relief.
Jewellery Only, Not Coins or Bars
The exemption applies only to ornamental gold like chains, bangles, and earrings. Gold bars, coins, and other forms are excluded. Customs duty will still apply to such items.
Duty-Free Baggage Limit Also Raised
The government has also increased the general duty-free baggage allowance. The new limit is ₹75,000 for Indian citizens and NRIs. Earlier, it stood at ₹50,000.
Relief for Overseas Indians
For Indians living in the United States, United Arab Emirates, and Gulf countries, this update is highly practical. Duty-free rules were last revised in 2016. The change aligns regulations with current prices and travel needs.
