NRIs Unhappy: India Bans Laptop Imports

Recently, the Indian government imposed import restrictions on laptops, tablets, and certain types of computers, citing security reasons and to support domestic manufacturing companies.

The decision has sparked mixed responses, especially from a section of NRIs.

NRIs feel they won’t be able to bring laptops and tablets from their country anymore, as the government is mandating purchases within India. Moreover, laptops are common gifts that many NRIs buy for friends and family when traveling to India from abroad.

There is little clarity on whether NRIs traveling from abroad can carry laptops as part of regular baggage under customs rules. Hopefully, officials will provide some clarity on this matter.

The social media landscape is flooded with trolls after Jio launched their laptop “Jiobook” on Aug. 1, followed by the government’s import restrictions on Aug. 3.
