A seemingly innocuous Snapchat joke catapulted British university student Aditya Verma into the limelight, with MI5, MI6, and Spanish authorities taking notice. Verma, on his way to Menorca, sent a light-hearted message claiming affiliation with the Taliban and an intent to destroy the plane, intended as a jest among friends.

This Snapchat caper set off a chain reaction, prompting a high-alert security response. The UK authorities, detecting the message through Gatwick’s Wi-Fi, swiftly informed their Spanish counterparts. Two F-18 jets from the Spanish Air Force escorted the easyJet flight, ensuring its safe landing in Menorca. Despite an extensive search, nothing suspicious was found.

Verma, arrested upon landing, spent two days in custody before being released on bail. The British Indian student then faced the scrutiny of MI5 and MI6, emphasizing that his intention was never to cause public distress. In court, he revealed that the message was part of a long-standing joke based on his appearance, aimed at making friends laugh.

Spanish authorities found no ties to jihadist radicalism after analyzing Verma’s phone, revealing research on regional conflicts but nothing incriminating. Though not facing terrorism charges, Verma could be fined, with the Spanish defence ministry seeking expenses for the security response.
