OPT Denied Over Graduation Date Fixable or Not

A minor mistake on an OPT application can have major repercussions. An F1 student had her application rejected because her schol entered the incorrect graduation date, which made it appear as if she applied prematurely.

Now she has to decide between applying for an I-290B Motion to Reopen or an entirely new OPT application. The school recommends the I-290B, but most cases illustrate the motions tend to be denied, with nothing in reserve for students.

Reapplying might be an option if she’s still within the 60 day grace period, but it’s not without risks. OPT approvals are not instantaneous, and a delay might impact her timely start to work.

For STEM students, losing OPT means losing precious career opportunities. A mere administrative error shouldn’t cost years of hard work and future career opportunities.

Schools require more defined procedures to avoid such mistakes. Currently, the most appropriate choices hinges on how much time she has and if an appeal has a good chance of being successful.
