Working for Free: OPT Student Stuck Without SSN

Getting a job after graduation in the US should be a relief. But for one international student, it has turned into a frustrating wait, as the Social Security Number (SSN) needed to receive their salary still hasn’t arrived.

Four Weeks Without Pay

The student, now working full-time under the Optional Practical Training (OPT) work permit, hasn’t received a single paycheque even after four weeks. Despite joining legally, they remain unpaid because their SSN application is still pending.

Application Stuck in Process

The F-1 visa holder said they applied for the SSN immediately after receiving the job offer. The local Social Security office promised delivery within four weeks. Yet, weeks later, there’s been no update—no card, no confirmation, nothing.

Payroll Blocked Without SSN

In the US, employers cannot process payroll without an SSN. This has left the student unable to access their wages or even confirm if they’re in the system. The ongoing US government shutdown has reportedly worsened delays across federal offices.

Waiting for a Broken System

For now, the student can only wait, despite doing everything right. The system that once allowed them to work legally has now become the very reason they can’t get paid—a harsh reminder of how fragile immigrant work rights can be in America.
