Getting an EAD card should be a relief but for one OPT holder, it just triggered a panic attack.
A woman who recently graduated and applied for OPT (Optional Practical Training) through her university was stunned when she received an alarming email from the US government. The message accused her of exceeding her “permissible period of unemployment” and warned her to take immediate action or face consequences.
However, she already holds a valid EAD (Employment Authorization Document), issued after she filed for a green card through marriage.
It has been active for years but the issue seems to be with the initial OPT period and possibly a failure to report her employment to SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System).
Netizens try to clear things up. Many students don’t realize that even if they’ve started working, they must manually update their job details in the SEVIS portal.
Some universities make this process clearer than others. In this case, the student claims she wasn’t told she had to report her job, and now ICE has flagged her as being unemployed for too long.
It is best to never assume and always check with experts, especially in the current political climate. Check SEVIS regularly before you get a scary email from the authorities.
