PM Modi: No Discrimination in India, Pushes Back on Human Rights

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the two greatest democracies’ capacity to promote global peace, stability, and prosperity in a joint news conference with US President Joe Biden. PM Modi rejected prejudice and reiterated India’s commitment to democracy and human rights in response to a journalist’s inquiry concerning religious minority rights.

He said democracy is in the Indian spirit and constitution and that democracy cannot survive without human values and rights. The Prime Minister stated, “Sabka saath, sab ka vikas, sab ka vishwas” (Together with all, development for all, trust from all), that his administration provides equitable development and opportunity for everyone, regardless of religion, caste, or region.

75 Democratic senators and representatives wrote to President Biden before the meeting, encouraging him to discuss human rights with PM Modi. President Biden and the Indian Prime Minister discussed human rights and democracy. Protesters outside the White House highlighted concerns over claimed rights abuses in India and religious minority prejudice.

Critics said religious minorities still face problems despite India’s commitment to democracy and human rights during the joint news conference. Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez skipped PM Modi’s address, claiming religious minority targeting.

Former US President Barack Obama said President Biden should address Indian democracy and minority rights concerns. President Biden and the First Lady invited Prime Minister Modi to the US from June 21-24.
