F-1 Rejected Twice: Second Master’s Raises Flags?

A hopeful international student recently faced a second F-1 visa rejection within two months. The applicant was planning to pursue a second Master’s degree in the United States, which raised concerns during the visa interview.

The applicant had earlier completed an online MBA in aviation management. They then applied for another Master’s degree in Aviation and Human Factors in the US. This academic progression became a key focus during the evaluation.

Family Applications Added to Concerns

Along with the F-1 visa, the applicant also applied for an F-2 visa for their wife and child. The entire application set has now been rejected twice. This combination further complicated the case.

Consular Officer Cites Academic Concerns

The Consular Officer closely questioned the need for a second Master’s degree at the same academic level. Despite submitting a letter of unpaid leave from their job, the visa was denied both times under 214(b).

Applying Twice Quickly Hurt the Case

Experts say applying again within such a short period can damage an applicant’s credibility. It may appear rushed and signal desperation. Officers often view this negatively during assessment.

Red Flags in the Application

Pursuing a similar degree in the same field raised doubts about academic intent. Prior work experience combined with bringing dependents also added to concerns. Together, these factors suggested a higher immigration risk.

Perceived Immigration Intent

The officer may have interpreted the situation as an attempt to settle in the US long term. Work history and family relocation plans are often treated as warning signs in F-1 cases.

Advice for Future Applications

The applicant has been advised to wait at least one year before reapplying. They must clearly justify why the second Master’s degree is essential. Strong financial and social ties to their home country will also be critical.
