STEM OPT Crisis: Mass Rejections Over Visa Status

America’s STEM OPT system is failing the very talent it once attracted. A UX/Product Designer, trained in cutting-edge tech like VR and AI, just got his job offer rescinded—only because he’s on a student visa.

After getting laid off and hunting for jobs for two long years, the techie finally had a breakthrough. But the moment he mentioned STEM OPT, the company withdrew. No reason, no conversation, just a cold, quiet rejection.

Now he’s got just three weeks left before he hits his unemployment limit and risks falling out of status. He’s interviewing nonstop, but the moment his visa comes up, responses vanish.

Either companies don’t want the hassle, or their processes move too slow for his ticking visa clock.

This is the ugly truth of America’s “merit-based” immigration system. Even when you’re highly skilled, trained in the US, and actively looking for work, your visa status can become your biggest liability.

Meanwhile, student loans pile up. Time runs out. And all the talk about “welcoming global talent” sounds like a scam.

The system clearly needs fixing. Until then, talent will keep finding them in such horror scenarios, waiting for the clock to spell an imminent end to their American dream.
