This USA State Appoints First Indian Judge

After the interesting case of an Indian- American presiding over Donald Trump’s case, there is another good news for the community. The state of Oregon, USA has decided to appoint an Indian American woman, Aruna Masih, to the state supreme court. She will be the first person of Indian origin to hold the position. She will also be the first South Asian and Punjabi to be promoted to the level.

Aruna Masih, who is currently 52, is an advocate for civil and worker rights. The governor of the state, Tina Kotek believes that she will bring a fresh experience to the place and offer a different perspective which will strengthen the supreme court.

One of the key challenges for her would be to restore the faith of communities in the judiciary. The judicial system in the USA has often been accused of biases. Racial prejudice is also an important issue that the system needs to deal with right now. The representation of people of color in the judiciary would hopefully change the situation.

Aruna was born in New York to an Indian father and a British mother. They also served as missionaries in rural areas of the state of Punjab in India.
