Top US University Denies Green Card: H-1B Trapped?

After 4 years of hard work and no bad reviews, an H-1B felt betrayed by their employer as they gave vague reasons for not starting the green card process.

A social media user, working at a top US university, recently shared that he was initially told the green card process would begin after 4 years. He waited patiently, built his life around that promise but just when it mattered, the university backed out.

They are now asking him to “prove himself” through his performance before they invest in his future. An experience which the H-1B holder described as “throwing under the bus,” it is not merely about performance, it is just the employer breaking their employee’s trust.

With only two years left on his H-1B, he’s running out of time. No PERM means no extension beyond six years as the GC process itself takes 1.5 to 2 years.

Even worse, universities often sponsor cap-exempt H-1Bs. That means switching jobs becomes harder. Private companies won’t touch you unless you win the lottery cap again, a nearly impossible task this late.

Meanwhile, social media is flooded with similar stories. The system is broken where employers keep delaying, and immigrants keep losing years of their lives.
