U.S. Embassy India: Follow or Face Deportation

Even if you’ve already got your U.S. visa stamped and packed your bags, don’t relax just yet. The US Embassy in India has issued a warning that a visa is not a golden ticket for life.

In an official message posted on X, the Embassy wrote. “U.S. visa screening does not stop after a visa is issued. We continuously check visa holders to ensure they follow all U.S. laws and immigration rules – and we will revoke their visas and deport them if they don’t.”

The immigration law is a huge net, and this isn’t just about serious crimes. Even working off-campus without permission, staying past your allowed time, or switching schools without following the right process could land you in trouble.

We witnessed it earlier this year with the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) crackdown, when innocent students had their visas revoked because of minor infractions including traffic violations, and cases where the students were acquitted by the court.

That crackdown was only reversed when the court intervened and gave a respite to F-1 students by reinstating their visas. However, some who feared legal action were already out of the country and now fear going back.

One would argue that even though that crackdown was reversed it did what it was intended to do, i.e., to instill fear among the visa holders. This warning by the US Embassy in India seems like another in the same vein.
