US Lifts Russia Oil Ban Amid Iran War: Relief for India

The Trump administration is reportedly reconsidering parts of its global trade strategy amid the ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran. One of the changes includes relaxing a key sanction linked to a recent US-Indian trade deal.

The United States has temporarily allowed countries to purchase Russian oil that is currently stranded at sea. The move reflects concerns about disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. The conflict has already pushed global oil prices higher.

The US Treasury issued a special licence on Thursday permitting the sale of Russian crude already loaded on ships by March 12. The permission is temporary. It will remain valid only until April 11 and will not apply to new shipments.

Officials describe the step as a short term measure to stabilise global energy supplies. Crude oil prices have crossed $100 per barrel again amid rising tensions. Recent attacks on a tanker and sea mines near the Strait of Hormuz have unsettled oil markets.

Nearly one fifth of global oil shipments pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Any disruption in this route can quickly affect global supply chains. As a result, energy markets have reacted sharply to the recent developments.

For India, the decision comes as a significant relief. The earlier US-Indian trade discussions reportedly included concerns about India buying Russian crude. Russia has remained one of India’s largest suppliers of oil.

The United States had earlier granted India a limited 30 day exemption to receive Russian cargo already at sea. The new licence expands that flexibility to other countries as well. This could allow Indian refiners to receive shipments already heading toward Asia.

The move may help stabilise domestic fuel prices at a time of global uncertainty. Oil markets remain volatile due to geopolitical tensions. However, some critics argue the decision may indirectly ease financial pressure on Moscow despite Western sanctions over the Ukraine war.
