
A US citizen, who also holds Dutch nationality, was recently denied an Indian tourist visa because they were maybe too honest in telling their plans to enter India from Pakistan. That one detail was enough for the Indian consulate in Kyrgyzstan to reject the visa on the spot.
The traveler wasn’t doing anything shady. They were on an overland trip, probably backpacking across Central and South Asia.
However, because they mentioned the Wagah border, the land route separating Indian and Pakistan in Punjab, the visa officer refused.
Officials reportedly told the applicant to either fly into India or try applying in Islamabad. But everyone on the internet agrees that applying in Pakistan is pointless right now, considering the political tensions between the two countries.
With no flights between India and Pakistan and a frozen land crossing, even US citizens are hitting a wall.
Travel forums were quick to respond. Many advised the tourist to take a detour, like flying into Nepal or another neutral country and entering India from there. Others simply warned not to mention Pakistan in your visa plans, cause that can blacklist you from the embassy altogether.
It seems, and rightfully so, for now, entering India through Pakistan is off the table, no matter if you have a US or a Dutch passport.
