Shocking news has emerged from the United States as hundreds of ballots were destroyed in Oregon and Washington. The authorities identified a “suspect vehicle” linked to the incident, calling it a direct attack on democracy.
On Monday, a Volvo was caught on surveillance stopping at a Portland drop box just before a fire was found inside, damaging three ballots. But the real crime happened in Vancouver, where a fire destroyed hundreds of ballots.
Authorities confirmed that these incidents are connected and even relate to an earlier fire in Vancouver on October 8. Both states have fire suppression systems in drop boxes, which worked in Portland but failed in Vancouver leading to bigger damage.
This has raised alarms in the US electoral process, especially given the significance of the close presidential race. Notably, both states are strongholds of the Democratic party which leads to speculation of the culprits being Republican supporters.
Spokespersons from both parties have condemned the act of political violence publically. Meanwhile, the authorities urged the voters to check the status of their ballot boxes online and ask for replacement ballots in case they are not marked as “received.”
The incident has now caught the attention of the Federal Bureau, which will investigate it further.
