For Mahendra Patel, a 62-year-old Indian origin man in Georgia, a trip to Walmart turned into the worst nightmare of his life. What should have been a normal shopping day ended with him spending 47 days in jail after a false kidnapping charge.
Arrest After Walmart Allegation
In April, Mahendra Patel was indicted by a Cobb County grand jury after 26-year-old Caroline Miller claimed he tried to snatch her child in an Acworth Walmart. He was arrested on April 3 and immediately sent to jail.
Struggles Behind Bars
Life inside jail was harsh. A vegetarian, Mahendra Patel survived mostly on bread, peanut butter, and milk. He lost 17 pounds, missed vital medication, and faced constant threats. Some inmates mocked him, while others demanded money or issued violent threats.
Social Media Backlash
Outside prison, social media turned against him. Strangers labelled Mahendra Patel a predator, demanded his deportation, and even suggested he should be burnt alive. Online outrage worsened his family’s trauma as they battled to prove his innocence.
Truth Revealed by CCTV
The case collapsed once Walmart’s surveillance footage was reviewed. It showed Mahendra Patel had not tried to kidnap the child but instead stopped the toddler from slipping off a motorised cart. With this evidence, all charges were dropped.
Demands for Accountability
Now free, Mahendra Patel is calling for justice. “I want a public apology from the police and the district attorney,” he told NDTV. He stressed that innocent people should never face such humiliation and suffering due to false accusations.
Concerns Among Indian Americans
The case has shaken Indian American communities. Many fear racial bias and rushed judgments in policing. While Mahendra Patel is free, the scars of 47 days in jail, health struggles, and public humiliation continue to haunt him.
