When it comes to the naturalization process, Indians are rushing to complete it, faster than most of their counterparts. They’re not just holding green cards, they’re trading them in for full American citizenship as soon as they can.
The USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) data for FY 2024 shows that Indians spend just around 5.9 years on a green card before becoming US citizens. That’s well below the national average of 7.5 years.
Even Mexico, the country that tops the chart in total naturalizations, has a wait time of nearly 11 years. So while Mexicans lead in numbers, Indians are moving quicker through the system.
The official requirement to be a US citizen is having permanent residency in the US for at least 5 years, or having a marriage-based green card for 3 years.
For many NRIs the path is clear— five years as a permanent resident, pass the English and civics test, and you’re in. Nearly 90 percent clear the test on their first try.
And these are not just tech workers. The median age for getting citizenship stands at 42 years, and 55 percent of the total were females.
Amid visa uncertainty, H-1B chaos, and political tension under Trump, citizenship means safety, freedom to switch jobs, and no fear of deportation.
The dream is clear for Indians, and it is not ending with just getting the green card. They need security which only an American passport can provide.
