The US immigration process has once again shown its flaws, with a simple clerical error costing a student his job. A recent graduate shared his ordeal after his Optional Practical Training (OPT) was derailed due to a mistake on his Employment Authorization Document (EAD).
Wrong Date Printed on Card
Although his OPT was approved, the EAD card he received in August carried the wrong end date. On his Designated School Officer’s (DSO) advice, he sent it back for correction. USCIS destroyed the card immediately but has not issued a corrected one even after weeks.
No SEVIS Update Without EAD
The problem deepened when the Student Exchange and Visitor Information System (SEVIS) failed to update to “OPT Approved.” Without this update, the student cannot access the system, report employment, or stop the unemployment clock that started on 29 July.
OPT Deadline Increases Pressure
The OPT allows only 90 days of unemployment. With each day lost, the student’s anxiety grows, while the employer loses patience. Without the corrected card, he is stuck in limbo, unable to legally verify his employment.
Career Future at Risk
Even if USCIS finally issues the corrected card, the delay may force the student to restart his job search. Losing more time from the grace period could ruin his plans and make his hard-earned opportunity in the US slip away.
