An F-1 student in the United States is facing uncertainty after a visa status change request was affected by a USCIS error. The issue has emerged just days before the applicant’s deadline, creating stress around their legal stay.
The student said they applied to change from an F-1 visa to a B-1/B-2 visitor status after taking medical leave. The request was filed before their student record ended in September 2025, with a stay requested until April 20, 2026.
The situation became complicated on April 10 when USCIS issued a Request for Evidence. Instead of processing it as a B-1/B-2 change of status case, the application was reportedly treated as a new F-1 visa request.
According to the student, the Request for Evidence asked for transcripts, fee receipts, and proof of attendance. These documents are not available as classes were never attended that term, making the request difficult and not relevant to a visitor visa case.
The current authorised stay is set to expire on April 20. The student also stated a need to remain in the United States until July due to ongoing medical treatment. This adds urgency and complexity to the situation.
A pending change of status application can allow a person to stay legally in the country. However, delays and incorrect case handling can create confusion. The pressure increases when timelines are tight and decisions are pending.
Many applicants have recently reported delays and unclear requests from USCIS. Such issues can disrupt plans at critical moments. Whether caused by system errors or manual mistakes, the impact on applicants remains severe with no resolution yet.
