A recent green card interview experience from Boston has raised fresh concerns among immigration applicants in the United States. A USCIS officer reportedly admitted there was still no clear guidance regarding some adjustment of status cases after the latest policy memo.
The applicant, who shared the experience on Reddit, claimed to be living in the US on an H-1B visa and married to a US citizen. According to the post, the couple attended their family-based green card interview on May 27 at the Boston Field Office.
The couple reportedly filed their I-130 and I-485 applications independently in March. They soon received biometric appointments and interview notices from USCIS. However, the interview took place after a recent USCIS memo describing green cards as a discretionary benefit in many situations.
The memo reportedly stated that consular processing may become necessary except in extraordinary cases. This has created uncertainty for applicants waiting for adjustment of status approvals inside the United States. Immigration discussions online have intensified following reports about possible delays.
According to the Reddit account, the USCIS officer asked detailed personal questions during the interview. Topics reportedly included parents, birthdays, jobs, first meetings, pets, previous addresses, habits, and family details. Such questions are commonly used to verify whether a marriage is genuine.
The applicant claimed the officer mentioned he would normally separate couples during questioning. However, he reportedly chose not to do so because their responses matched consistently throughout the interview. This initially gave the couple confidence about the outcome of their case.
The biggest concern reportedly emerged toward the end of the interview process. The officer allegedly said he personally believed the marriage was genuine but remained uncertain about the next steps due to confusion surrounding the latest USCIS memo.
According to the applicant, the officer suggested that the I-130 petition would likely receive approval. However, the I-485 adjustment application could face stricter background checks and potentially remain pending until clearer USCIS instructions are issued for such cases.
The reported comments have increased anxiety among green card applicants already facing long waiting periods and policy uncertainty. Many applicants now fear additional delays if pending adjustment cases continue to remain without clear procedural guidance from immigration authorities.
