Canada is cracking down on the international visa scam and over 8,000 Indian students will face the brunt of it.
A Canadian official disclosed that up to 10,000 acceptance letters from international students were found to be fraudulent. Data suggest over 80% of them were from the Indian states of Gujarat and Punjab.
As a result, thousands of Indian students studying in Canada are in danger. Visa experts believe Canadian universities will soon cancel their admission and deport them back to India.
A tough response from the Canadian government is expected, especially with tensions between India and Canada soaring high. However, stricter action needs to be taken against the visa agencies that issued these letters.
This has wasted the valuable time and money of thousands of students who were on top of the moon after getting their acceptance letters.
This scandal highlights the need for more awareness among students and families about safe visa processes. Scammers exploit aspirational Indians who look for better opportunities abroad.
Canada’s tough actions are understandable, but punishing innocent students won’t solve the problem. The focus must shift to stopping the fraud at its source.
