Why People Mocking Ramaswamy’s H-1B Promise?

Vivek Ramaswamy, the Indian-American Republican presidential hopeful, is making waves with his promise to end the H-1B visa program, which he himself has utilized a whopping 29 times.

Ramaswamy has boldly labeled the program “indentured servitude” and vows to replace the lottery-based system with a meritocratic admission process if he clinches the White House in 2024.

The irony is thick here: Ramaswamy denounces a system he’s benefited from extensively. His former company, Roivant Sciences, secured 29 H-1B visa approvals between 2018 and 2023.

Ramaswamy argues that the H-1B lottery system serves only the companies that sponsor immigrants, likening it to indentured labor. However, the inconsistency between his policy stance and his past practices is pretty obvious, which people are mocking.

Ramaswamy, himself a son of immigrants, has also raised eyebrows with his hardline immigration policies, including using military force to secure the border and deporting US-born children of undocumented immigrants.

The H-1B visa program remains contentious, with high demand and limited slots. Ramaswamy’s stance may remind some of former President Trump’s mixed messaging on the topic, despite his own use of H-1B visas for his businesses.
