Hotstar Specials’ Lootere is based on the real-life hijacking of an Indian cargo ship by Somalian pirates in 2017. The series features Vivek Gomber, Rajat Kapoor, Aamir Ali, Deepak Tijori and others in key roles, but it soon ran into controversy.
The issue began when the producers of the 1993 film Lootere starring Sunny Deol and Juhi Chawla filed a case. They claimed the web series used the title Lootere without permission, demanding penalties against the makers of the show.
The case reached the Bombay High Court, which dismissed the claim. The court said that merely registering a film title does not give copyright ownership forever, especially when two projects are completely different in theme and treatment.
It was also noted that film titles often repeat in the creative industry, and audiences can easily differentiate between them. Many fans agreed with the ruling, pointing out that the old film Lootere no longer holds major appeal today.
The verdict came as a relief to the makers of the web series, who can now continue without fear of penalties. Supporters praised the court for applying practical reasoning to resolve the dispute sensibly.
