Karan Johar’s Big Blunder: Renaming Cult Remake?

Shazia Iqbal’s fearless film Dhadak 2 is now streaming on Netflix and reaching more viewers. Its theatrical run suffered because audiences dismissed it as a sequel to Dhadak, which was already criticised for being a weak copy of Sairat.

Despite being another remake, Dhadak 2 found its own voice. It explored caste-based atrocities and love with sensitivity and boldness, making it stand apart from the first film while addressing harsh social realities.

Many pointed out that the film lost a large audience because of its title. If released under a different name, it might have performed better. The connection to Dhadak overshadowed its originality and kept many away from theatres.

In an interview, director Shazia Iqbal and actor Siddhant Chaturvedi revealed that the film was originally titled Panther, as a tribute to the Dalit Panthers movement. Dharma, however, rebranded it as Dhadak 2 to link it with the earlier film.

Siddhant admitted that the title never felt right. For him, the film was about identity, but by being both a remake and a sequel, its own identity was lost. This contradiction hurt its reception despite strong storytelling.

While Dharma did not compromise on the subject, fans were disappointed that the film was positioned as a sequel. Many said it felt like an attempt to turn regional stories into a caste-atrocity franchise under a business-first approach.

The reaction confirms concerns that important stories are being reshaped for commercial gain. Once again, it is art and the artists who pay the price, even when the film itself carries power and meaning beyond its label.
