Piracy is one of the biggest enemies of the entertainment industry and billions of dollars are lost every year by filmmakers and content creators because of illegal and free distribution and broadcast of their content without their permission. The government of India has come up with new rules against piracy in its Draft Broadcasting Bill and they would be aimed at curbing the illegal broadcast of copyrighted content.
The Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill would not allow anyone to broadcast a programme without the license from the copyright owners. This has been stated in the anti-piracy provision of the bill which has many other amendments.
An important thing laid down in the bill is the definition of Piracy. Piracy has been defined as the unauthorized reproduction, distribution, broadcast, transmission, online publication of any programme without the explicit consent of the copyright holders.
The government can also set up a dedicated task force for dealing with piracy. This can prove to be an important step to curb this rampant crime in the country. India is among the countries where piracy is extremely high and millions of people illegally stream or download content as a norm.
