The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) has informed the court that it is committed to incorporating necessary rules and regulations in its policy governing social media platforms and intermediaries.
The court had previously emphasized the urgency of framing rules to regulate content on social media and OTT platforms, especially considering the exposure of young children to vulgar language.
This development comes after the court’s criticism of the use of obscenities in the TVF web series ‘College Romance.’ The court pointed out that such language degrades women, treating them as objects of sex.
In March, the court upheld an order to register an FIR against the show’s creators and actors under the Information Technology Act but clarified that it did not include arrest orders.
The court’s stance reflects the global challenge of regulating content on social media and OTT platforms. With this promise of action from the government, there’s hope for a safer online space free from offensive language and profanities.
