One of India’s most talked about unreleased OTT projects has an interesting backstory. Gulkanda Tales was originally planned as a two part feature film with Kamal Haasan in the lead.
The project is now an Amazon Prime Video period comedy drama series. It stars Kunal Kemmu, Pankaj Tripathi and Patralekhaa.
Reports suggest the show was completed in 2023. However, it has not been released yet due to concerns over its subject matter in the current political climate.
Director Rahi Anil Barve recently revealed that the project was first titled Ashwalinga. It was designed as a two part film before being reworked.
After the release of Tumbbad, the makers reshaped the concept. The story was expanded into a six hour OTT series with eight episodes.
Gulkanda Tales is described as a visually rich and eccentric comedy. It is set in the era of the Kama Sutra and mounted on a large scale.
Rahi has called it a beautiful show that is stuck in the wrong climate. He maintains that the series is strong and unique.
Some fans feel the director may be overhyping the project. Yet he insists that audiences will understand its ambition once they watch it.
Rahi’s recent film Mayasabha has received positive reviews from critics. He is also preparing for his upcoming film Pahadpangira.
Despite this, fans remain disappointed about the delay. Many believe they missed the chance to see Kamal Haasan explore the imaginative world originally planned.
For now, viewers can only hope that Gulkanda Tales eventually releases for Indian audiences.
