Gone are the days when people in the West used to consider our films a joke. Previously, they would laugh at our mindless movies, which left no impact on Hollywood. With “RRR” reaching the Oscars, it feels like times are changing, and people are genuinely appreciating our films.
The Sundance Film Festival has given us another reason to celebrate. Two Indian films, “Girls Will Be Girls” and “Nocturnes,” received a total of three awards at this prestigious event.
“Nocturnes,” a movie by Anirban Dutta and Anupama Srinivasan, won the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Craft. The film revolves around a scientist studying hawk moths in the Himalayas.
“Girls Will Be Girls,” produced by Ali Fazal and Richa Chadda, received two awards in the categories of World Cinema Dramatic and Special Jury Award for Acting. The movie explores the life of a girl named Mira, played by Preeti Panigrahi, as she navigates adolescence and the accompanying physical and emotional changes.
It’s amazing to see these Indian movies receiving the recognition they deserve on international platforms. However, it’s unfortunate that these art films often go unnoticed before anyone discovers them. It’s high time we encourage audiences to support these indie movies and let the art flourish.
