Indian Piracy Crackdown: Legal Win for OTT Giants

Disney, Netflix, Crunchyroll, Warner Bros and Apple have joined forces in an Indian High Court case to block hundreds of pirate domains. These sites allegedly stream films and shows without licences, prompting coordinated legal action by major global OTT players.

On December 18, 2025, the Delhi High Court issued a “Dynamic+ injunction” against the accused platforms. The order directs internet service providers and domain registrars to suspend access and prevent mirror or cloned sites from resurfacing.

The ruling specifically names pirate domains such as yflix.to, animesuge.bz and bs.to. It also requires registrars worldwide to disclose subscriber details linked to site operators, signalling a tougher approach than earlier blocking measures.

Indian courts have issued blocking orders for years, but this move marks a more aggressive phase. The focus is on cutting off new operational routes for infringers rather than reacting after damage has occurred.

Supporters see the action as essential to protect creative work and intellectual property. Piracy continues to cause major financial losses, with estimates suggesting India alone loses over ₹22,000 crore annually across film and OTT content.

Critics argue piracy thrives due to structural issues. Fragmented regional rights, rising subscription costs and limited local availability often make legal access difficult or unaffordable for many viewers.

A large section of Indian media consumers has accessed pirated content at some point. This reflects a demand that existing legal distribution models have struggled to fully address.

Domain blocking may offer short term relief but is not a complete solution. Without improvements in pricing, accessibility and regional licensing, piracy is likely to continue despite stricter enforcement.
