Kaala: Bijoy Nambiar’s Stylish Crime Drama

Disney+ Hotstar has come up with a unique show called “Kaala,” directed by Bijoy Nambiar, known for his work in movies like “Wazir” and “Taish.” The show stars Avinash Tiwary, Rohan Mehra, and Jitin Gulati in lead roles.

The story revolves around businessman Naman Arya, played by Rohan Mehra, who operates an illegal cartel behind his waste recycling business, with black money involved to the tune of 14 trillion. It’s now up to Ritwik, played by Avinash Tiwary, and his team to clear up this mess. The relatively simple story unfolds in two timelines, one involving Neeraj Arya and the other concerning Ritwik’s dad in the year 1980s.

The show, much like Bijoy Nambiar’s filmography, features crisp editing, a fast-paced narrative, and a beautiful color palette. What sets Bijoy apart from other directors is his stylized treatment of action scenes, reminiscent of “Taish.” The action scenes and cinematography are particularly praiseworthy.

In terms of performance, the series is excellent. Avinash Tiwary’s star is on the rise, especially after the success of “Khakee: The Bihar Chapter.” He has had two shows released in just two days, “Bambai Meri Jaan” and now “Kaala,” on two of the biggest OTT platforms.

However, the show overall is not a smooth ride, as you can feel the emptiness between the relationships of the characters. While attempting to delve into the technical aspects of “reverse hawala,” it fails to emotionally engage the audience.
