Dulquer Salmaan’s film Kaantha, directed by Selvamani Selvaraj, released in theatres on November 14 and received mixed reactions from audiences. While some praised parts of the film, many walked out unsure, leaving its overall response stuck between appreciation and disappointment across language markets.
The mixed talk soon reflected at the box office. Kaantha ended its theatrical run with a disaster status and now plans a fresh run on Netflix from December 12. The film streams in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi with a four week exclusive window.
Despite the poor box office result, a section of viewers spoke positively after watching it in cinemas. Many highlighted Dulquer Salmaan’s performance as the strongest part. Some also felt the story worked better in quieter viewing conditions than in crowded theatres.
Even some critics argued that the failure had less to do with the film itself and more with excessive hype. After the press show, several trackers labelled it a masterpiece. That raised expectations unfairly for a slow paced film aimed at a niche audience.
After the OTT update, many trackers now predict a better outcome online. They point to the steady performance of slow paced crime and investigation dramas on streaming platforms. The belief is simple, viewers at home show more patience for layered stories.
Netflix will provide the real answer. Whether Kaantha finds a second life or fades further depends on how viewers respond after December 12. The shift from theatres to streaming offers one final chance to change its story.
