Lost in Translation, a Melancholy You Would Wanna Get Lost In

If romance is the perfect genre for you then Lost in Translation will be a warm cozy bed on which you will rest after a long and bumpy ride of life. Sofia Coppola created this masterpiece in 2003 and the basic idea is simple. It is about two lonely Americans who feel lost in an unknown culture, a new culture in the city of Tokyo. and find a friend within each other.

The neon lights, the bright signs, and the skyscrapers of Tokyo contrast with their mentality. There are a few glimpses, a few awkward smiles, and almost zero to no interaction for the first 30 minutes of the film. They meet in the hotel by chance and the main story kicks off. Bob Harris (Bill Murray) is an American actor whose career will face a downfall and it leads to a shoot of Whisky commercial in Japan. There he meets Yale graduate and philosophy major Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson)

This is a mirror against the meaninglessness of life, showing the evergoing battle between what someone ought to do against what someone wants to do. As Bill (Bob) says in the movie, “The more you know who you are and what you want, the less you let things upset you.”, it summarizes the melancholic yet happy tone of the movie. Not just as a sadist but as someone who understands every aspect of life, you will find the meaning of the pain and the suffering and all the bad things that are happening.

Bill Murray has been the most important aspect of the film and you will be mesmerized by his excellent acting skills. Scarlett Johansson also delivered one of her career bests whenever he was present on the screen. This warm and witty love story won’t make your heart full of grief but will make it feel like a wave of positivity in life.
