Mumbai Meri Jaan: A Fresh Take on Mumbai Mafias

Amazon Prime Video’s latest series, “Mumbai Meri Jaan,” is out now and is gaining momentum each day. The show consists of 10 episodes, each ranging from 37 to 53 minutes. Originally based on Hussain Zaidi’s book “Dongri to Dubai,” this show chronicles the journey of the Mumbai mafia from the 1960s century. The series delves into the early life of India’s most wanted man, Dawood, by slightly tweaking the name to Dara played by Avinash Tiwary, and his relationship with his father.

The show is a brilliant recap of movies like “Daddy,” “Shootout at Wadala,” and “Once Upon a Time in Mumbai.” It is receiving huge praise from both the audience and critics. In terms of storytelling, it has a jackpot in the form of a rich heritage of mafia stories. Director Shujaat Saudagar has managed to embed all the major plot points over these 20 years with great precision. Although the show takes time to come into its full colors, building up the setting in the first half, the second half is a wild ride.

In terms of performances, the show does not disappoint. Kay Kay Menon and Avinash Tiwary hold the fort strongly, perfectly making the characters their own. These roles have been played by many people in many movies, yet these two actors manage to make them their own. The rest of the cast, such as Saurav Sachdeva and Kritika Kamra, have also done great work.

However, despite all these positives, the show has not gained the popularity of other Prime shows. Perhaps Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani failed to make it reach a wider audience, or maybe our audience is saturated with the influx of crime shows on OTT platforms.
