Nayanthara’s Most Controversial: Netflix to Hotstar

Nayanthara’s 2023 film Annapoorani, directed by Nilesh Krishnaa, is set to stream on JioHotstar from October 1. The film, in which Nayanthara plays a chef, has already been one of the most controversial projects of her career after facing backlash during its theatrical and OTT runs.

Annapoorani was earlier removed from Netflix worldwide after complaints accused it of promoting love jihad and hurting Hindu sentiments. The controversy centered around two scenes—one where the protagonist speaks about a God eating meat, and another showing her offering prayers during a competition. The love story between Annapoorani and Farhaan was also cited in the allegations.

The backlash grew when the Hindu Seva Parishad in Jabalpur filed an FIR against the film following its Netflix release. In response, co-producers Zee Studios issued an apology for unintentionally hurting religious sentiments. Despite this, the film is now making its return on JioHotstar, giving audiences another chance to decide whether the outrage was justified.
