The new Netflix documentary Unknown Number: The High School Catfish is drawing huge attention for its shocking storyline. It follows the life of Lauryn Licari, an American teenager, and her boyfriend Owen McKenny. Their relationship takes a dark turn when Lauryn begins receiving disturbing online messages.
These messages told her she was worthless and unlovable. The shocking revelation later showed that behind the cruelty was her own mother, Kendra, who wanted to break Lauryn and Owen apart.
Owen’s mother, Jill McKenny, said, “It was terrifying, knowing someone was watching him so closely and could even find phone numbers.”
But the documentary leaves out an important detail. After Lauryn and Owen broke up, Owen moved on with a new girlfriend. Even then, Kendra invaded his life again, driven not by concern for her daughter but by an unhealthy obsession with Owen.
In the Netflix series, Owen’s mother tried to explain this, but her voice was largely ignored, with very little screen presence given to her.
The shocking twist revealed itself when the police investigated the threatening messages Owen received. They traced similarities back to Kendra’s IP address. She admitted her crimes, yet the series presented her confession almost as if she were a victim.
Audiences are buzzing about this Netflix release because it is based on true events. The controversy has sparked debates and curiosity, making it one of the most talked-about documentaries right now. If you have not seen it yet, watch Unknown Number: The High School Catfish streaming only on Netflix.
