Netflix is facing criticism after denying credits to researcher Satyen Bordoloi, who worked on the show Saare Jahan Se Achha. Historical dramas depend on detailed research to look authentic, but the contribution of researchers often goes unrecognised.
From the wallpaper in a room to the buttons on a character’s shirt, every detail in a period drama needs careful study. Research ensures that each scene, shot, and frame reflects the correct historical setting.
Satyen Bordoloi revealed that he spent months researching even the smallest aspects of 1970s India and Pakistan for Saare Jahan Se Achha. He said his efforts were ignored when the credits rolled, despite his essential contribution.
Bordoloi shared that what he wanted was basic acknowledgement of his work. Instead, he was told that Netflix did not want to include his name in the credits. He called this deeply unfair and disrespectful.
The researcher also highlighted how many in his profession face the same treatment across the Indian film industry. Even in big-budget period dramas, researchers are often paid less than spot boys and treated as optional staff.
When researchers do their jobs well, their work blends seamlessly into the story, making it feel authentic. Without them, historical errors would be obvious. Denying them credit, especially on a global platform like Netflix, raises serious concerns.
