In 2022, Netflix made a substantial investment of £8.4 million (equivalent to $10.2 million) in the production efforts of one of its U.K. subsidiaries, Netflix Productions U.K. Limited. On paper, this may appear as significant progress for the British film and TV industry, but there are notable downsides.
Now, there’s an 11% increase in production investment, but it’s not quite as straightforward as it seems.
Emily MacKintosh, the director of business and legal affairs at Netflix U.K., attributed the increase in revenue primarily to a significant uptick in content expenses, as mentioned in the company’s financial report.
The revenue increase also reflects Netflix’s expanding presence in the U.K., where it has delivered beloved shows such as “Sex Education,” “Bridgerton” (along with its spin-off “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story”), “Top Boy,” “The Crown,” and “Heartstopper,” among many others. It’s worth noting that in 2020, Netflix doubled its U.K. production budget to $1 billion.
In 2021, the company reported a turnover of £7.5 million, which rose to £8.5 million the following year. The report also noted that content expenses amounted to £11 million, compared to £10.1 million in 2021. A significant portion of these expenses fell under the category of general and administration expenses, which saw an 8% increase, rising from £7.1 million to £7.7 million.
Aside from the increasing expenses, the number of employees also grew from 18 to 20.
