While last week saw intense competition across OTT platforms, a clear winner has emerged in the form of JioHotstar’s latest release, Sarzameen. The film, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Kajol, and Ibrahim Ali Khan, may have received mixed reviews but has still secured the top position in viewership.
Despite not impressing many viewers critically, the performances of Prithviraj and Kajol drew attention, contributing to the film garnering 4.8 million views in its opening week, as per Ormax Media’s OTT viewership estimates.
Interestingly, Sarzameen surpassed Housefull 5, which began streaming on Prime Video from August 1st. The Akshay Kumar-led comedy, which underwhelmed at the box office, only managed 3.7 million views over the weekend, reflecting a similar reception in the OTT space.
Another notable release from JioHotstar, Ronth, featuring Roshan Mathew and Dileesh Pothan, has been winning acclaim since its July 22 release. It continued to perform well with 2.6 million views last week, adding to the platform’s overall success.
However, Sarzameen not only beat Housefull 5 and Ronth in viewership but also outperformed other fresh Prime Video titles like Dhanush’s Kuberaa and Siddharth’s 3BHK. Despite the mediocre reception, Sarzameen has managed to attract massive attention, and it will be interesting to watch how the film fares in the coming weeks.
