After a long wait of seven years, the Student of the Year franchise is finally moving ahead with a new installment. This time, it is titled Student of the Year: After Dark, and it is going to be a series instead of a film.
The teaser for the upcoming show was released on October 19, 2026. It is directed by Reema Maya, and Shanaya Kapoor is playing the lead role. Other cast members have not been revealed yet, and the show is scheduled to premiere on November 13, 2026.
For first-timers, the teaser is undoubtedly going to be a shocking experience, considering the way it has been cut. Looking at the titles and everything else, anyone will think that this will be a normal show just like the first two films. But the reality is different.
The makers deserve credit for the abrupt shift from a light moment to a dark moment. A smiling girl is spotted dancing among other people, and suddenly, her face changes to that of a dead body. Whether the series is a whodunit thriller or a story of some serial killer targeting students remains the biggest question.
As of now, it is clear that Dharma Productions is bringing something fresh for the audience. It could be a horror thriller with a dark theme. But at the same time, it creates a certain level of doubt for one particular reason.
The setting will easily remind anyone of the ‘80s slashers like Prom Night or the fourth installment of the Fear Street franchise, which was released on Netflix in 2025. Even the FX series, The Shards, follows a similar format.
Everything is fine until it is original or a fresh approach has been taken for something that is copied. Shifting the franchise to OTT is surely the best decision for Dharma, as box office is very unpredictable today. But it cannot be said with conviction whether the upcoming entry will be a memorable show for the audience.
Dharma Productions is dealing with multiple failures, and Shanaya’s last film, Tu Yaa Main, failed to leave an impression despite positive reviews. Let’s see if this new entry in the Student of the Year franchise will bring success for both sides.
