2025 Box Office Shock: Small Films Win, Big Stars Fail

2025 turned into a box-office shocker as small films outperformed big star projects. The predictions made at the start of the year failed to match the final outcome.

Trade experts had expected action spectacles to dominate the year. Films like War 2 starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR and Kantara Chapter 1 were expected to cross the Rs 500 crore mark worldwide.

Sequels such as Thamma and Housefull 5 were predicted to touch Rs 300 crore. Salman Khan’s Sikandar, Akshay Kumar’s Kesari Chapter 2, and Ajay Devgn’s Son of Sardar 2 were expected to have stable Rs 200 crore runs.

However, cinema trends proved unpredictable. Star power and franchise value were not enough to win over audiences this year. Instead, the biggest surprises came from unexpected films.

Chhaava starring Vicky Kaushal led the year with over Rs 800 crore worldwide. It became India’s top grosser of 2025. The success surprised many who did not expect it to perform at this scale.

Mohit Suri’s Saiyaara turned into a massive hit. With newcomers Ahaan Pandey and Aneet Padda, the film earned over Rs 570 crore worldwide. Its viral music and fresh story connected strongly with viewers.

Mahavtar Narsimha, an animated mythological drama, collected Rs 326 crore worldwide. With a budget of Rs 15 crore, it achieved a record 1,508 percent return, making it the year’s most profitable film.

Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat featuring Harshvardhan Rane and Sonam Bajwa earned over Rs 80 crore through strong word of mouth. It became another surprise success of 2025.

Dhanush and Kriti Sanon’s Tere Ishq Mein is now joining the list after an impressive Rs 51 crore opening weekend. The film is showing strong momentum at the box office.

Meanwhile, expected blockbusters like War 2 and Kantara Chapter 1 underperformed despite heavy hype. Their failure underlines how unpredictable audience behaviour has become.

These hits show that 2025 belonged to fresh stories, new talent, and strong content. Even as some films faced criticism, others managed to rise above and dominate the box office.
