OTTs in Shock: Aamir Chooses Rs.100 on YouTube

In a bold and surprising move, Aamir Khan has decided to skip all traditional OTT platforms for his latest release Sitaare Zameen Par. Instead, he will release the film on YouTube Movies on Demand, starting August 1. Indian viewers can rent the movie for just Rs.100, and the same model will be available in over 30 countries with region-specific pricing.

This decision to bypass platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus Hotstar, and SonyLIV has stunned the entertainment industry. Insiders suggest that these OTT giants are taken aback after losing out on what is expected to be one of the biggest digital releases post-theatrically. The unexpected rollout has triggered wide debate among filmmakers and distributors.

Aamir’s move is not just disruptive—it’s strategic. With Sitaare Zameen Par already crossing Rs.150 crores at the Indian box office and over $30 million globally, he’s now testing a direct-to-digital path. His model centers on reaching the majority of Indian audiences who don’t have access to pricey streaming platforms.

According to Aamir, just 2–3% of the population watches movies in theatres. By releasing it directly on YouTube, he hopes to tap into the remaining 97%, especially those in semi-urban and rural regions. His focus is on accessibility, pricing, and direct audience engagement over traditional digital rights deals.

What makes this even more radical is that Aamir Khan Productions retains full creative and financial control. Unlike most OTT deals that demand surrender of intellectual property, this revenue-sharing partnership with YouTube allows Aamir to retain ownership. The move signals a shift in how content creators may view distribution going forward.

YouTube, on its part, sees this as a bold entry into premium on-demand cinema. With billions of views daily, the platform is betting big on high-profile Indian releases to drive a new kind of digital consumption. This could encourage more filmmakers to test the waters with direct releases.

Aamir has also mentioned that this model could be revolutionary for independent creators. By allowing audiences to decide a film’s success rather than studio contracts or curated OTT deals, YouTube may become a more democratic film marketplace. This new method could redefine how Indian films are monetized and distributed.

However, not everyone is celebrating. Some users on social media have called Aamir out for what they see as a major U-turn. After promoting the importance of theatres and pledging support for the big-screen experience, critics now say he has contradicted himself.

One viral post said: “After all the PR drama and ‘saving theatres’ articles, Aamir Khan is now releasing Sitaare Zameen Par on YouTube! Not even an 8-week window? A man of words really?” The backlash shows that even bold moves come with scrutiny.

Whether this new release model marks the beginning of a revolution or remains a one-time experiment, one thing is undeniable: Aamir Khan’s Rs.100 YouTube strategy has already disrupted the streaming ecosystem in India. Now it’s up to the audience to decide if this is the future of Indian cinema.
