Is Aditya Dhar Limited Director? No Hits Beyond One Genre?

Director Aditya Dhar is now regarded as one of India’s top filmmakers after the strong success of the Dhurandhar films. Both parts performed well at the box office and with audiences, earning praise for storytelling, writing, and overall cinematic quality.

Over the past few years, Dhar has been associated with around six films, with only one failing to make an impact. This success ratio is notable, and a clear pattern can be seen in the projects that worked well.

In 2019, Dhar directed Uri: The Surgical Strike, starring Vicky Kaushal. The political drama collected around 342 crore worldwide and emerged as one of the biggest hits of the year.

In 2024, he co wrote Article 370, starring Yami Gautam. The film became a sleeper hit, earning nearly 110 crore worldwide against a budget of 20 crore.

In 2025, Dhar tried to break this pattern by producing Baramulla. The film combined political drama with horror elements and was released on Netflix. It received appreciation for its themes and engaging content.

He later directed Dhurandhar and Dhurandhar 2, both of which performed exceptionally well. These films continued his trend of working within the political drama space on a large scale.

Interestingly, one of his Netflix releases that did not perform well was outside this genre. This has drawn attention to the consistency of his success with political subjects.

In 2025, Dhar produced and co wrote Dhoom Dhaam, starring Yami Gautam and Pratik Gandhi. The action comedy romance released on Netflix but received an average response from viewers.

While the film was not criticised heavily, many viewers felt it was a one time watch. It did not create the same impact as his previous successful projects.

Looking at his filmography, fans often remark that Dhar excels in political dramas. His attempt to explore a different genre did not deliver the same results.

Some believe he should continue focusing on the genre that has consistently worked for him. His strength in political storytelling remains his biggest advantage.
