Karuppu Director Cries but No Use: May 14 Release Delayed

Suriya fans were left shocked and frustrated on Thursday after the shows of his film Karuppu were suddenly cancelled at the last minute. Many fans had already reached theatres early in the morning expecting to watch the film, only to discover that the shows were not happening.

Social media has been filled with several angry and frustrated people sharing photos and videos from outside theatres, saying they were informed about the cancellations only after arriving at the locations.

The release problems are allegedly connected to financial issues involving Dream Warrior Pictures, the production banner behind the film.

As confusion and backlash started growing online, writer-director R. J. Balaji released an emotional video in which he appeared visibly upset and crying while speaking about the unexpected situation surrounding the film’s release.

“I am really sorry to all the fans. It shouldn’t have happened. Many of you would have travelled early in the morning to catch the 9 am show of Karuppu. We watch films to escape from the problems in our lives, but watching this film itself shouldn’t have become stressful. I never expected this situation either,” he said.

“I manifested that Karuppu would release on May 14 and become a blockbuster. I am emotional because of the pain behind this situation. But I still believe the film will release this evening. So many people are working hard to solve the problem. Suriya sir has given so much to this film. Sorry for all the stress, but the film will be worth it,” Balaji added.

While many fans appreciated his honesty, others questioned how such major release issues could happen for a highly anticipated big-star film at the very last moment.

Even after Balaji’s statement, uncertainty still continues around the release. At the time of reporting, only a limited number of theatres appeared to be accepting bookings for evening shows on ticketing platforms. Because of this, many industry observers now believe the full release may happen only on May 15 instead of Thursday itself.

For Suriya fans especially, the delay has become even more disappointing because the actor is currently going through a very crucial phase in his career. Many fans were hoping Karuppu would become a strong comeback film.

In recent years, several films across industries have faced last-minute issues involving finances, distribution agreements, digital rights, or theatre settlements.

The biggest damage in such situations is usually faced by audiences and theatre owners. Fans plan their schedules, travel to theatres, and spend money expecting a confirmed release. For theatre owners too, sudden cancellations create confusion because shows, staffing, and operations are already planned in advance.

As of now, Suriya’s Karuppu has failed to make it to theatres today due to the ongoing financial issues surrounding the release. The film could finally release tomorrow, May 15, if the pending dues and financial settlements are resolved today.

Interestingly, Dream Warrior Pictures reportedly has another major film with Karthi titled Marshal waiting in the pipeline for a late 2026 release. Many industry observers are now closely watching how the banner handles its upcoming projects and financial planning going forward.
