Amitabh Bachchan has spent years protecting his name and image from being used without permission. Now, the superstar may have to make a personal appearance before the Delhi High Court if he wants to continue with his personality rights case.

The development comes after the court was told that Bachchan had reached an amicable settlement with some of the defendants through mediation. However, the settlement is yet to be formally signed because of some logistical issues on the actor’s side. The court has given more time for the formalities to be completed.

But there is a clear condition. If the settlement does not go through and Bachchan wants to continue pursuing the remaining claims, he will have to be personally present at the next hearing. The court has listed the matter for November 16.

Bachchan’s legal battle began in 2022 after his identity was allegedly being used without his permission for commercial purposes. The complaints were not limited to someone simply putting his photograph on a product. His name and image were allegedly being used for fake lottery promotions linked to Kaun Banega Crorepati, while his identity also appeared in merchandise and other commercial activities.

The court had granted Amitabh Bachchan interim protection in November 2022, recognising the concerns surrounding the unauthorised exploitation of his celebrity identity. His case has since become one of the prominent examples of a major Indian star seeking stronger protection over his personality rights.

Now, after nearly four years, the case has reached an interesting stage. A settlement could close at least part of the dispute, but if the remaining issues continue, Bachchan himself may have to step into the courtroom to keep the fight going.
