Over the past decade, Bollywood has seen a surge in sequels built on some of its most acclaimed films. However, very few of these follow-ups have managed to match the success or impact of their originals.
This growing trend has made audiences question why producers prefer investing in forced sequels. Many wonder why original and creative storytelling is being sidelined, unlike earlier phases of the industry.
Film and trade analysts point to a simple reason behind this obsession. They believe Bollywood is leaning heavily on sequels because it is struggling creatively and unwilling to take risks on new stories.
According to critics, many recent sequels function purely as cash grab projects. These films rely more on nostalgia than on strong writing, innovation, or meaningful storytelling.
Earlier, Bollywood sequels were often genuine continuations of a story. Today, the focus has shifted towards brand extension, where popular titles are reused mainly for commercial safety.
Sequels are not new to Bollywood. Films like Welcome Back, Yamla Pagla Deewana 2, and Jism 2 were also made with similar intentions, but most failed due to the lack of added value.
The massive success of Gadar 2, led by Sunny Deol, created a ripple effect. It encouraged producers to treat nostalgia as a reliable business model.
The industry realised that backing new ideas carries high risk. In contrast, sequels to iconic films offer a safer return and attract audiences regardless of quality.
Films such as Housefull 5, Sitaare Zameen Par, Race 3, Hera Pheri 3, Kick 2, Border 2, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, and the announced Kabhi Khusi Kabhie Gham 2 are seen by many as weak extensions of popular franchises.
Despite criticism, such sequels continue to be produced rapidly. The reason is simple: audiences still turn up for films driven by nostalgia.
This trend, however, has long-term consequences. It restricts opportunities for new writers, directors, actors, and technical talent who struggle to find space in a risk-averse industry.
As producers rely on familiar faces and titles, experimentation takes a back seat. This reinforces the creative slump while benefiting only a few established names.
Ultimately, the responsibility lies with the audience. Demanding better stories and originality is essential before Bollywood turns into a sequel-making machine with no room for fresh ideas.
